Hurdles Colouring Page

Hurdles is a track event in which runners sprint along marked lanes and pass over a series of evenly spaced barriers. The goal is to keep a smooth running rhythm while clearing each hurdle safely, not to jump as high as possible. Athletes lead with one leg, fold the other leg to the side, and continue running as soon as they land. Hurdle height and race distance change for different ages and competitions. Young children learn with very low, lightweight training hurdles that tip safely if touched. In this picture, one cheerful runner lifts over a hurdle while another athlete follows far behind. Several barriers show the path down the lane, and the open track leaves plenty of room for safe landings. Hurdling helps develop timing, balance, coordination, flexibility, and confidence. It should always be practised with a teacher or coach. Athletes warm up, check the lane for obstacles, wear tied shoes, and begin with walking drills before trying a run. They travel in one direction, keep a large gap between runners, and never climb or sit on the hurdles. Touching a hurdle is not a reason to feel upset; learning a steady rhythm is more important than speed. Colour the main runner in a bright outfit that stands out from the track. A second colour can decorate the shoes and socks, while the following runner can wear a contrasting team palette. Make the hurdle top bars bold red, orange, blue, or striped, and use a quieter grey, tan, or silver for their supports. The track could be terracotta, blue, or green with clean white lane markings. Add soft green bushes beyond the rail and a pale blue sky, leaving the clouds mostly white. Try using a slightly darker colour on the nearest hurdle and lighter versions on the smaller distant hurdles; this creates depth without heavy shading. You may add little flags outside the lane or a water bottle near the rail. Keep the space beneath the athlete light so the bent legs are easy to see. When finished, the repeating hurdles should guide the eye along the safe route from the foreground toward the distant runner.
