Holle Cropper Colouring

The Holle Cropper is a Dutch dwarf cropper shaped from a collection of beautiful curves. Viewed from the side, breeders say its body, globe, and carriage should fit into an imaginary circle. It has a short, broad, compact body; a large soft balloon crop; a curved neck; and a head carried back near the centre of the globe. The tail is held almost horizontally, and the legs are clean or have only a few small feathers. The bird is lively but described as pleasant and trusting. During courtship a male may take tiny tripping steps, spread his tail, dance, and hop. The Holle is smaller and rounder than the huge Dutch Cropper, so the two should not be confused. No exact breed lifespan has been established, but healthy domestic pigeons commonly live around 8 to 15 years. The Holle Cropper is an old Netherlands breed. The Dutch rare-breeds foundation points to a similar pigeon in a 1665 painting by Melchior d'Hondecoeter and connects it with the old Dutch Oploper type described in 1735. By the late nineteenth century, Hague, Amsterdam, and Groningen forms had developed. The Holle Kropper Club, founded in 1904, created a shared standard that gradually united them. No single person can be named as the inventor, although later artists and breeders refined the famous circular outline. Holle Croppers occur in solid, pied, mottled, barred, and tigered colours. Try glossy black, clean white, slate blue, silver, warm red, or yellow. Use curved strokes around the crop to emphasise its roundness, then colour the short body without hiding the smooth circle. The eye may be dark in white birds or warm red-orange in coloured varieties, and the legs can be reddish pink. Make the Dutch path warm brick red, the doorway tan, and the tulips bright pink, yellow, or purple. Use broad crayons on the globe and paving stones, then sharpen pencils for toes, eye, beak, and flower leaves. Keep the bird's head comfortably nestled behind the crop. A fantasy Holle can be sky blue with a sunset-orange globe, as long as its cosy ball-shaped silhouette remains easy to see.
