Hawksbill Turtle Colouring Page

Meet the hawksbill sea turtle, a graceful ocean reptile named for its narrow, pointed beak, which curves a little like a hawk’s bill. Hawksbills live in warm parts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. Young turtles may drift in the open sea, but older ones are strongly connected to shallow coral reefs, rocky ledges, lagoons, and mangrove areas. Reef caves give them safe places to rest, while their slim beak helps them reach food hidden in small cracks. Sponges are a favourite meal, although they may also eat algae and other soft reef animals. By feeding on sponges, hawksbills help make room for many kinds of coral reef life. An adult is usually about 60–105 centimetres long and often weighs 45–70 kilograms. Hawksbills grow slowly, may not become adults until they are 20–35 years old, and are thought to live around 50–60 years. Their overlapping shell plates have a beautiful pattern, while the back edge of the shell can look slightly saw-toothed. Their powerful front flippers carry them smoothly through the water. Hawksbills are endangered, so clean seas, protected nesting beaches, and healthy reefs are very important. In this picture, the turtle is calmly exploring a reef with rounded sponges, branching coral, seagrass, and bubbles. Begin with the large shell sections. You could use amber, golden brown, orange, cream, or dark brown in a patchwork pattern, leaving a narrow pale edge between some plates. Colour the head and flippers olive, tan, or warm brown, then add darker spots if you wish. The sponges can be orange, purple, yellow, or red, and the branching coral can be pink, coral-red, or any imaginative colour. Try two or three greens for the seagrass. Use light blue for the water, but leave some white spaces so the page stays bright. Add darker blue close to the seabed and pale blue around the bubbles. Colour gently inside the bold outlines, and remember that your reef may be realistic, rainbow-bright, or completely invented.
