Glyptodon Armour Colouring

Glyptodon was a giant armoured mammal related to living armadillos. Glyptodon clavipes is best known from South American fossils, especially Argentina and neighbouring countries. Glyptodont relatives later reached Central America and the southern United States. A large Glyptodon could be about three metres long and weigh well over a tonne. Its body was protected by a rigid domed carapace built from hundreds of small bony plates called osteoderms. More armour covered the head, while rings protected the thick tail. Unlike a modern armadillo, the shell did not bend into flexible bands and the animal could not roll into a ball. Strong legs carried the heavy structure as it grazed and browsed low plants. The beautiful tiled armour is its special character. Each plate had a patterned surface, and the shell could weigh hundreds of kilograms. Its blunt tail lacked the giant mace of Doedicurus, which helps children tell the two animals apart. Fossils cannot show a precise lifespan or name a final individual. Glyptodonts disappeared around the close of the last Ice Age, roughly 10,000 to 11,000 years ago. Their exact extinction cause remains uncertain. Changing rainfall and vegetation transformed grasslands and woodlands, while people hunted large mammals and may have used abandoned shells. A combination of fast environmental change and human pressure is more likely than a single universal event. Colour the shell sandy gold, warm brown, terracotta, grey or olive. Try alternating two gentle shades across the bony tiles, but keep the pattern clear and not too dark. The head and legs may be brown-grey, with cream around the muzzle and dark nails. Use soft green and yellow for the pampas, turquoise or light blue for the stream, and pale purple for distant hills. Follow the round shell with curved pencil strokes and use short strokes on each tile. Leave slim white highlights along the highest dome. Keep the tail thick and tapering without adding a club. When finished, the page should look like a peaceful armoured herbivore rather than a dinosaur—an amazing mammal whose closest living cousins include tiny modern armadillos.
