French Mondain Colouring

Meet the French Mondain, a domestic fancy pigeon whose country or region of origin is France. The Mondain is famous for an exceptionally broad, deep, rounded breast, short body, low wide stance, horizontal carriage and surprisingly small head. It is among the heaviest recognized pigeons: European adults are often about 900 grams to 1.1 kilograms, while the North American standard allows roughly 850–1,130 grams depending on sex and condition. This page turns those real breed features into large, friendly shapes that young colourists can recognize without making the bird look like a cartoon chicken. French fanciers developed the modern show type from older local utility Mondains; a unified standard was adopted in 1931. The work involved many breeders, so no single creator is reliably credited. Like every domestic pigeon breed, it belongs to the species Columba livia and ultimately descends from the wild rock pigeon. It is best understood as a carefully selected loft bird, not as a separate wild species. A suitable home is A large, dry loft with broad low shelves, spacious nest bowls and a secure exercise yard that supports its heavy body safely. Strong nest bowls, non-slip floors and careful weight management are important; the goal is firm healthy muscle, not excess fat. Smooth, clean footing and safe perch spacing help prevent sore toes and damaged feathers. Offer a balanced pigeon grain or pellet ration, suitable grit and minerals, fresh water every day, and a shallow bath. A well-kept domestic pigeon commonly lives about 8 to 15 years, and some live longer, but lifespan depends on genetics, clean housing, nutrition, veterinary attention and protection from predators. Children should admire and colour pigeons while an adult handles real birds gently. Colouring guide: You may colour this Mondain pure white, glossy black, warm red, golden yellow, blue barred or softly checked. If choosing white, add only pale blue-grey along the lower edge so the round shape remains visible. For a blue bird, use two darker wing bars and a deep slate tail tip. Make the iris warm orange, the beak pale or horn coloured, and the feet rosy red. Colour the dovecote pale limestone with a reddish roof, the lavender purple and green, and the flat stones light grey. Use broad circular pencil strokes over the enormous breast to suggest its roundness without adding dark shading. Keep the tiny head and short legs cleanly coloured so the special size contrast remains obvious. Before you finish, compare the two feet, the wing edges and the tail so no small section is missed. The simple background supports the story of the breed's origin, while the pigeon remains the star of the page. There is no single “correct” picture: a careful realistic palette teaches breed features, and an imaginative rainbow palette can be just as joyful.
