Frangipani Tree Colouring Page

Frangipani, or plumeria, belongs to a group of small tropical trees native to the Americas and Caribbean. People have carried it to warm gardens around the world, where its fragrant flowers are especially familiar in South and Southeast Asia and Pacific islands. A frangipani commonly grows about 3 to 8 metres tall and can live for several decades. Thick, smooth, forked branches form an open crown. Long leathery leaves cluster near the tips, and waxy five-petalled flowers curl like small pinwheels. Some types drop most leaves during a cool or dry season, allowing the flower clusters and sculptural branches to stand out. Strong fragrance becomes more noticeable in the evening and can attract moths, although some flowers offer little nectar and rely on scent to bring pollinators close. Birds and butterflies investigate blossoms, and geckos hunt small insects on warm trunks. The picture places the tree in a sunny dry-season island garden. Frangipani releases milky latex when cut; it may irritate skin and is not food. Children should never snap branches or taste flowers and should wash hands if sap is touched accidentally. Frangipani flowers can be white with golden centres, yellow, pink, coral, deep red or multicoloured. Begin with a pale centre and sweep stronger colour toward the petal edges, or reverse the pattern. Colour the long leaves bright to deep green with a lighter centre rib. The smooth branches can be pale grey, beige or warm brown, with slightly darker rings and knots. A gecko may be green, sandy brown or grey with bright toes. Give the nectar bird jewel tones, the hawk moth earthy tan and pink, and the butterfly a contrasting tropical pattern. Make the sea light blue, the distant plants green and the stepping stones grey or warm cream. Use broad, even strokes on petals and leaves, then short strokes around toes, feathers and antennae. Leave some white highlights on the waxy petals so they look fresh in the sunshine. Keep the sky and path pale; this lets the unusual thick branches and flower clusters remain clear and makes the dry-season scene inviting rather than crowded.
