Fir Tree Colouring Page

True firs belong to the genus Abies and grow naturally in cool mountain and northern forests of North America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Species differ, but many mature firs stand 20 to 60 metres tall and can live for several centuries. Their needles are usually flat, soft-looking, and attached directly to the twig. A pleasant resin scent may come from the foliage, but children should not taste any part of an unknown tree. The clearest fir clue is its cone: fir cones stand upright on upper branches like candles. When mature, they break apart on the tree instead of falling whole. A snowy winter reveals how the tree is built. The tapering crown and flexible branches release some heavy snow, and the evergreen needles can begin making food whenever light and temperature allow. Nuthatches climb trunks headfirst while looking for insects and seeds. Snowshoe hares shelter near dense branches and change from brownish summer fur toward white in snowy regions. Fir forests also support owls, squirrels, lichens, and fungi. People sometimes grow firs as holiday trees, but the living forest is more than a decoration. Families should follow local rules, never cut a wild tree without permission, and leave cones and animal tracks where they find them. The picture includes the fir's tiered branches, flat needles, upright cones, snow, a hare, and a nuthatch. Use deep green, blue-green, and lighter silver-green across the branch layers. Fir cones may begin green or purple and mature to brown, so choose one stage or make the upper cones slightly younger and brighter. Colour the trunk grey-brown with subtle vertical lines. A winter snowshoe hare can remain mostly white with pale grey-blue shadows and dark ear tips. The nuthatch may have a blue-grey back, warm rusty sides, a light face, and a dark eye stripe. Leave broad snow areas white and add pale blue beneath branches and around the roots. Use short strokes in the direction of the needles, rounded strokes on the cones, and soft even strokes on the animals. Keep the distant trees pale. When complete, the upright cones should be easy to spot, helping young naturalists remember how a fir differs from a spruce.
