English Magpie Colouring

The English Magpie is a tall, elegant fancy pigeon whose name comes from its bold black-and-white style, rather than from any close relationship to the wild magpie bird. Its head, upper neck, back, wings, and tail form one coloured section, while the breast, belly, thighs, and lower neck are white. Show breeders also value a long narrow head, slender neck, slim body, long wings, and tall clean legs. The result is a pigeon that looks poised and almost drawn with a ruler. It is a domestic loft breed, not a wild species. Breed-specific lifespan figures are not established, but well-cared-for domestic pigeons often live around 8 to 15 years. Its refined shape is more important than great weight or bulk. The modern English Magpie has a carefully recorded but multi-step history. The National Pigeon Association's account says the older Magpie belonged to the tumbler family and reached England through Germany from Denmark around 1900. It also credits W. E. Cooke of Bracey with using the taller French Bagadais in a foundational cross that helped create the modern long-bodied type. Sources do not provide one certain year when the finished breed suddenly appeared, so it is more accurate to recognise Cooke's documented contribution while remembering the work of many later breeders. For a classic picture, colour the head, upper neck, wings, back, and tail glossy black. Leave the lower front and belly white. You could instead choose rich red, sunny yellow, blue, or dun, because several colour varieties exist. Keep the border between colour and white crisp. Use a dark pencil lightly first, then deepen the large coloured areas with smooth strokes. A tiny green or purple gleam on a black neck can suggest shiny feathers. Make the brick loft warm red or sandy brown, the roses pink or crimson, and the grass fresh green. Coloured pencils are useful around the narrow neck, face, and pattern edges, while crayons can fill the wings and garden. Leave highlights in the eye and on the beak, and take care not to shorten those wonderfully long legs with dark background colours.
