English Carrier Colouring

Meet the English Carrier Pigeon, a grand domestic fancy breed developed in England. It is not the same as a modern racing homer, even though the word carrier reminds us of the long history of pigeons carrying messages. The show breed is famous for its tall, statuesque stance, long slender neck, long straight body and exceptionally long, strong box-shaped beak. Around the beak is a prominent powdery wattle, while each eye is framed by a broad, nearly circular cere. The legs are clean, with no foot feathers. A mature English Carrier is a large pigeon, traditionally about 17.5 to 18 inches from beak tip to tail and around 20 to 23 ounces, or roughly 570 to 650 grams. Its story stretches back several centuries. Seventeenth-century naturalist Francis Willughby described wattled carrier pigeons seen in England, including birds in the royal aviary at St James's Park and at the home of London fancier Mr Cope. Later writers repeated a tradition that earlier stock travelled from the Basra and Persian region, although the exact route cannot now be proved. English fanciers gradually selected the dramatic exhibition shape and enlarged head features. No trustworthy record identifies one sole creator or one exact founding year, so it is fairest to credit many generations of breeders. Historical sources also note that the special wattles can take several years to mature. With excellent care, domestic pigeons commonly live about 8 to 15 years, and some live longer. A real English Carrier needs a roomy, dry, well-ventilated loft, clean water, balanced pigeon feed, suitable grit and minerals, bathing water, companionship and safe exercise. Broad perches and a clean floor help its long body and strong feet. An experienced adult should gently check the eyes, beak and wattles for dirt or irritation and contact an avian veterinarian when a bird seems unwell. Children can enjoy the breed on paper while adults provide all real-bird care. In this colouring scene, the proud pigeon stands in a Victorian-style brick loft courtyard. Begin with the enormous eye ceres and beak wattle, using cream, pale pink or soft white so their bumpy outlines stay visible. Choose glossy black, warm brown, blue-grey, silver, red, yellow or a playful fantasy colour for the plumage. Traditional blue birds can have two dark wing bars and a dark tail band. Colour the brick wall warm red or sandy brown, the wooden perch tan and the flowers bright colours. Use long pencil strokes down the neck, wings and tail to emphasize the bird's elegant height. Finish with the small eye, beak edge, toes, grass and brick lines, leaving a little white space for shine.
