English Barb Colouring

The English Barb is a compact British fancy pigeon with a face that is easy to recognise. It has a very short, broad beak, a rounded forehead, a small beak wattle, and thick circular eye ceres that look like soft rings around the eyes. The National Pigeon Association places the Barb in the wattle group, beside breeds such as the Dragoon and English Carrier. The Barb is much shorter and more compact than the tall Carrier, however, and its large eye rings are its special feature. It is an old breed associated with England, yet the historical record does not name one certain developer or a single creation year. Many fanciers contributed to the shape seen today. Exact breed-specific height and lifespan figures are not firmly established. It is best described as a medium, sturdy fancy pigeon; as with other domestic pigeons, its years of life depend heavily on thoughtful care, safe housing, clean water, and suitable food. On this page the Barb stands in an English garden with daisies and a low brick wall. You could colour the pigeon glossy black, snowy white, warm red, golden dun, or blue-grey. The fleshy eye ceres can be pale rose, coral, or soft red, but keep the eyeball dark with a tiny white sparkle. A gentle cream beak will help the rounded wattle stand out. Colour the bricks warm red-brown, alternate a few darker bricks, and give the flowers yellow centres with white, pink, or purple petals. Use broad, even strokes on the chest and wing. Follow each curved wing feather from its base toward its rounded tip. Around the face, slow down and colour the eye rings neatly; they should look like healthy, rounded skin, not spectacles glued on the bird. Add a faint shadow beneath the pigeon’s feet to anchor it to the path. The page has large open spaces for beginners, while older children can add subtle feather patterns or a second shade along the breast. Finish by choosing a friendly name for this serious-looking garden visitor.
