Elephant Calf Colouring

Splash at the riverbank with an African elephant and its cheerful calf. African savanna elephants live across parts of sub-Saharan Africa in grasslands, open woodland, wetlands, and areas close to reliable water. The very large ears on this picture help identify an African elephant and also release body heat like natural fans. Adult females commonly stand about 2.4 to 2.7 metres at the shoulder and may weigh roughly 2,700 to 3,600 kilograms. Elephants can live for about 60 to 70 years in the wild when they have enough food, water, and safe habitat. Elephants live in close family herds led by an experienced female called a matriarch. Mothers, sisters, and aunts help protect calves and teach them where to travel. A calf uses its trunk for breathing, smelling, touching, drinking, and eventually picking up food, but mastering this remarkable tool takes practice. Elephants often bathe, drink, and spray water or mud over their skin to cool down and protect it from the sun. Here the adult and calf raise their trunks together, creating two playful arcs above gentle ripples, reeds, smooth stones, and a distant tree. Natural elephants can be coloured warm grey, dusty brown, or soft blue-grey. Try a slightly lighter shade for the calf and pale pink or peach inside the ears. Add darker grey carefully around the knees, trunk folds, and feet, but leave plenty of open light space. The splashing water might be bright blue, turquoise, or even rainbow coloured. Use greens for the reeds and distant tree, then choose tan, rust, and grey for the riverbank stones. A very pale blue wash across a few water areas can make the white splashes shine. Crayons are perfect for the big rounded bodies and open water, while coloured pencils can reach the toenails, eyes, tail hairs, trunk wrinkles, and tiny ripples. Follow the long curve of each trunk with smooth strokes. Leave a small white highlight in the eyes and on several water drops. Colour from top to bottom so your hand does not smudge finished areas. When the page is complete, imagine the low rumbles and happy splashes of a family cooling off together on a warm African afternoon.
