Dwarf Elephant Colouring Page

Palaeoloxodon falconeri was a remarkable dwarf elephant from Sicily and Malta in the Mediterranean. Fossils from Sicily, Italy, are especially famous. Its ancestors were much larger straight-tusked elephants that reached the islands when sea levels were low. With limited food and no large land predators, generations gradually became smaller, an evolutionary pattern called island dwarfism. An adult P. falconeri stood only about one metre tall and weighed a few hundred kilograms, making it one of the smallest elephants known. It was not simply an elephant calf: adults had mature teeth and bones in a compact body. Detailed studies of tusks, teeth and bones reveal another surprise. These elephants grew slowly, reached maturity at about fifteen years and could live at least sixty-eight years, a very long lifespan for such a small mammal. P. falconeri lived during the Middle Pleistocene, broadly between about 500,000 and 200,000 years ago. No named last individual is recorded. Its disappearance occurred far too long ago for eyewitness accounts, and the exact cause is unknown. Island climates, sea levels, vegetation and animal communities changed repeatedly. A slow-breeding species on a limited island could be vulnerable to drought, habitat shifts or chance events. Research has not securely tied this elephant's extinction to the arrival of people, so the honest answer is that scientists are still investigating. Later elephants recolonised Sicily and produced different, larger dwarf forms. For colouring, make the little elephant soft grey, warm brown, dusty pink-grey or sandy beige. Use a paler colour inside the ears and around the eyes. Its two short tusks can be cream or ivory. The limestone cave may combine light grey, tan and peach, while Mediterranean shrubs can use olive, sage and bright flower colours. Colour the distant sea blue or turquoise. The dormouse could be chestnut, golden brown or grey, with a fluffy tail. Use smooth strokes across the elephant's body and tiny curved strokes around its knees and trunk. Keep the adult proportions clear, then compare it with the dormouse and cave opening. This playful scale comparison shows how life on an island can reshape even an elephant.
