Dragoon Pigeon Colouring

Meet the Dragoon Pigeon, a strong English fancy breed with a name that sounds fierce but belongs to a calm domestic bird. The Dragoon’s special character is easiest to see around its head. Look for a broad, wedge-shaped skull, a stout blunt beak, a grooved wedge of soft wattle above the beak and neat round eye ceres. Its neck is thick, its breast is broad and its compact body stands proudly at an angle on short, clean legs. A historical British standard described a bird about 15 inches, or 38 centimetres, from beak to tail. Modern standards emphasize balance and powerful proportions more than one exact measurement. The breed developed in England from older wattle and carrier pigeons. Dragoon-like birds appeared in pigeon literature by 1735 and were used to carry messages into the nineteenth century. The National Pigeon Association of Great Britain records the Dragoon Club as inaugurated on 17 July 1886. That is an important club date, not the birthday of the breed. Several generations of fanciers shaped the modern show bird, and no dependable source names one person as its sole inventor. Some histories connect its deeper ancestry with Near Eastern pigeons, but the exact route is uncertain, so it is best not to turn a possibility into a fact. A well-cared-for domestic pigeon often lives about 10 to 15 years, and a few live longer. A Dragoon needs a dry, airy loft, clean water, balanced pigeon food, mineral grit, bathing water, companionship and safe room to fly or exercise. Regular cleaning and help from an avian veterinarian protect its feet, breathing and distinctive facial skin. Children can enjoy learning from the picture while an experienced adult cares for any real pigeon. Domestic birds should never be released to survive alone. In this colouring scene, the Dragoon stands beside a low English brick wall, a small wooden loft and simple flowers. Start with the large body and choose blue-grey, black, red, yellow, white or a creative pattern. Keep the beak wattle and eye ceres pale pink, cream or soft grey so their outlines remain clear. Try a warm orange or pearl shade for the eye and rosy red for the clean legs. Colour the bricks in gentle reds and browns, the loft in warm wood tones and the leaves green. Use long strokes along the wing and tail, then short careful strokes around the head. Leave a tiny white highlight in the eye and compare both feet before you finish.
