Dragon Blood Tree Colouring

The dragon blood tree, Dracaena cinnabari, grows naturally only on the island of Socotra, part of Yemen in the Arabian Sea. Its extraordinary crown looks like an umbrella turned inside out. Thick branches repeatedly divide into two, and stiff sword-shaped leaves gather in dense rosettes at the tips. A mature tree is often 6 to 10 metres tall and grows very slowly. Some may survive for several centuries. When the bark or wood is injured, the tree produces a deep red resin traditionally called dragon's blood. People have used the resin in dyes, varnishes, and traditional practices, but living wild trees should never be cut for a souvenir. Socotra has long dry periods and short, cooler rainy times. The broad, tightly packed crown can catch mist and light rain, guiding precious moisture toward the roots and shading the ground. Birds use the crown as a perch, while insects visit seasonal flowers beneath and around the tree. The raptor and butterfly in this scene represent the island's web of life. Dragon blood woodland is threatened by grazing, climate change, slow regeneration, and habitat disturbance. Young trees need protection to replace ancient ones. Children can help by learning about island species, respecting protected areas, and never buying wildlife products of uncertain origin. The illustration shows the thick pale trunk, many forked branches, spiky leaf rosettes, rocky plateau, distant dragon blood trees, a bird of prey, a butterfly, and small flowers after rain. Colour the trunk and branches light grey, stone brown, or dusty beige. The leaves can be blue-green, olive, and deep green, with lighter tips. If you add the famous resin, use only a few tiny crimson or burgundy marks in natural bark cracks rather than colouring the whole trunk red. The raptor may be sandy brown, cream, grey, and dark brown; the butterfly can carry brighter island colours. Use rust, ochre, lavender-grey, and tan on the rocks, then fresh green around the newest flowers. A pale blue sky will keep the umbrella crown clear. Follow every fork with curved strokes and colour leaf rosettes from centre outward. Leave open white gaps between branch clusters. The finished scene should celebrate a rare tree shaped by drought, mist, and patient growth.
