Dire Wolf History Colouring

The dire wolf, Aenocyon dirus, was a powerful meat-eating mammal of the Americas. Fossils are known from southern Canada and the United States through Mexico and into South America. It lived during the Pleistocene and survived until roughly 12,000 to 10,000 years ago. Many skeletons come from Rancho La Brea in California, where more dire-wolf remains have been recovered than those of any other large mammal. An adult was broadly wolf-sized but more heavily built, often around 1.5 metres long and perhaps 50 to 70 kilograms. Its exact lifespan is unknown. Scientists once called it Canis dirus, but genetic work showed a very old, distinct canid lineage, leading many researchers to use Aenocyon dirus. Its special strengths were a broad head, powerful jaw muscles and robust teeth suited to eating large prey and cracking some bone. Shorter, sturdier lower legs suggest it was built more for strength than for the longest high-speed chases. Dire wolves probably hunted herbivores such as horses, bison and camels. The abundance of individuals at La Brea has also encouraged the idea that they may have worked in social groups, although fossils cannot show every detail of their behaviour. Dire wolves disappeared during the late-Ice-Age extinction. No named final wolf was recorded. Many large prey animals vanished as climate and habitats changed, and people became more widespread. Food loss was probably important, while competition, disease or direct human effects remain possible. Researchers still debate the mixture, so no single cause should be presented as certain. Colour the dire wolf charcoal grey, smoky brown, reddish tan or a mixture like a living wild canid. Use a lighter cream on the muzzle, chest and belly, and deepen the ears, back and bushy tail. The prairie can be gold and olive, rocks grey-brown, distant bison dark brown, and the sky pale blue or sunset peach. Use short strokes along the cheeks and chest to make thick fur, then longer strokes down the legs. Shade the broad head gently so it looks sturdy without looking angry. Add a white eye highlight and a soft dark nose. The heavy body, broad skull and strong paws should make this extinct hunter easy to recognise.
