Date Palm Oasis Colouring

The date palm is an ancient fruit tree of hot, dry regions in North Africa and the Middle East. People have cultivated it for thousands of years, especially around oases and irrigated farms. A mature palm commonly reaches 15 to 25 metres, with one tall trunk marked by old leaf bases and a crown of long feather-like fronds. Date palms may remain productive for many decades and can live for roughly a century or more when conditions are favourable. Male and female flowers usually grow on separate palms. Wind carries much of the pollen, and farmers may also help pollination. Female palms form hanging clusters of oval dates that ripen from green through yellow or red to deep amber or brown, depending on the variety. Harvest often comes in late summer or autumn. The crown offers perches and shelter for birds such as hoopoes, while bees and other insects visit flower clusters. Fallen fruit can feed wildlife, but growers protect most of the crop for people. Dates are sweet and energy-rich, and the leaves and fibres have long been used for mats, baskets and shade. Palms need water at their roots even when the air is very dry, which explains the little irrigation channel in this oasis scene. Children should never climb a tall palm or stand below workers harvesting heavy fruit bunches. Fruit should be washed and any hard stone removed before eating. Colour the trunk with warm tan and brown, making each old leaf base a slightly different shade. Use several greens on the arching fronds, working from the centre rib outward with long strokes. Dates can be golden yellow, orange-red, amber, chestnut or a mixture showing stages of ripeness. Make the flower spray cream and pale yellow. A hoopoe often has a cinnamon body, bold black-and-white wings and a fan-shaped crest, while the bee can have yellow and brown bands. Choose sandy beige for the dunes, fresh green for oasis grasses and light turquoise for the water. Keep the background gentle so the fruit clusters stay easy to see. Colour one cluster at a time, leaving tiny white highlights on a few dates. This page can become a warm autumn oasis filled with food, shade and busy wildlife.
