Danzig Highflier Colouring

The Danzig Highflier began around Danzig, the historic city now called Gdańsk in Poland. The official special-club standard describes it as a local breed developed in Danzig and the surrounding area at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and club history reports birds there by about 1810. No single breeder is credited, so this elegant pigeon belongs to generations of local fanciers. Its long, slender body is carried almost horizontally, while the head forms a gentle wedge from above. A broad shell crest rises at the back of the head and flows neatly into the neck. The standard calls for a medium-high stance and a full tail carried broad and slightly arched. As its name suggests, ancestors were valued for high flight, though modern birds may also be bred for exhibition. There is no reliable breed-only lifespan figure; healthy years depend on good loft ventilation, safe exercise, clean food and water, and protection from poor weather and predators. The colouring scene places the crested bird above Gdańsk’s old rooftops. Choose black, blue-grey, red, yellow, white, or a bold pied or tigered pattern. The eye can be pale pearl with a small dark pupil, while the beak stays light horn. Colour the shell crest carefully so its layered feathers remain clear. Old-town houses can be pastel yellow, rose, blue, and cream, with reddish roofs and a pale blue Baltic sky. Keep distant buildings lighter than the pigeon. Begin with the long body, wing, and tail, using strokes that travel toward the feather tips. Add a second shade under the folded wing and along the lower tail. On the crest, colour one curved section at a time and leave thin white gaps between feather rows. Younger children can make the bird one solid colour; older artists can build a symmetrical pied design. Add a soft shadow beneath the feet so the pigeon sits securely on the rooftop. When finished, trace the almost horizontal back line with your finger and compare it with the upright neck and high crest.
