Damascene Pigeon Colouring

Meet the Damascene, a special fancy pigeon connected with Syria, traditionally associated with Damascus. Its country or region of origin is Syria, traditionally associated with Damascus. The Damascene has smooth silver-grey plumage, crisp black wing bars and tail band, a strong dark beak, and striking eyes surrounded by pale ceres. Its clean, streamlined shape differs from heavily crested or muffed fancy breeds. The breed is linked with Damascus and the long pigeon-keeping tradition of Syria. It is often described as ancient, but very early dates repeated in hobby writing are difficult to prove. The safest history is that Syrian and later international fanciers preserved and refined the type over many generations. No reliable record names one inventor or one exact year of creation. An ancient Syrian pigeon type preserved and refined over many generations; no single developer or secure founding year is known. The Damascene is a domestic pigeon, not a separate wild species. It is a medium, athletic-looking pigeon with close feathering and a balanced, slightly upright stance. Exhibition size is described by body proportions rather than one universal length, so individual birds vary. With a clean, dry loft, room to exercise, balanced pigeon food, mineral grit, fresh water, companionship, and prompt veterinary help, a well-kept domestic pigeon can often live about 8 to 15 years. Decorative feathers need gentle care, and heavily feathered feet or crests should be checked regularly. These birds belong with knowledgeable keepers; children can admire them quietly and let an adult handle all daily care. Use pale silver-grey over the body, charcoal or black for two wing bars and the tail band, and a deep black beak. The eye may be a vivid ruby or orange-red with a pale surrounding ring. Add a faint green or violet shine on the neck if desired. Colour the pigeon in light, even strokes so its silver coat remains bright. Draw the wing bars with a sharper pencil and repeat their thickness on both sides. The courtyard arch can be warm cream, the fountain blue-grey, jasmine flowers white, and date leaves rich green. Give the swallow blue-black wings and a warm throat. A pale sky and sandy floor will suggest the Syrian setting while leaving the bird’s crisp markings easy to see.
