Cyrus Tomb Colouring Page

The Tomb of Cyrus the Great stands at Pasargadae in Fars Province, southwestern Iran. Cyrus II founded Pasargadae as the first dynastic capital of the Achaemenid Persian Empire in the sixth century BCE. Ancient writers connected this compact monument with his burial, and it remains the site's most recognisable building. The tomb is made from large pale limestone blocks. Six broad stepped courses lift a small rectangular chamber above the plain, and a simple gabled stone roof covers it. The design is plain but powerful: the enormous blocks, balanced proportions and isolated setting create dignity without crowded decoration. Scholars generally place its construction late in Cyrus's reign, around 540-530 BCE, but no surviving inscription on the tomb names an architect. Pasargadae included palaces, a fortified terrace and an early royal garden organised by paths or water channels. Its art and architecture combined ideas from several cultures within the expanding empire. The tomb has survived while many nearby buildings became ruins. Its original contents are gone, and stories told across later centuries must be treated carefully. Today the whole archaeological site is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage property because it preserves an early stage of Achaemenid architecture and Persian garden planning. On this colouring page, count the wide stone levels beneath the little chamber. Use pale cream, warm ivory, light grey or sandy beige for the limestone. Make the lower steps a touch darker and the roof edges slightly deeper to show the stacked form. You can add very soft peach or gold to the sunlit side while keeping the doorway dark enough to stand out. Colour the distant hills dusty rose, tan or lavender-grey. A cypress may be deep green, and the simple garden channel can be clear blue or turquoise. Add green leaves and cheerful yellow, pink or red flowers near the ground. Use broad horizontal pencil strokes on each step and shorter diagonal strokes along the roof. Leave thin white highlights on the top edges so the monument appears bright under the Persian sky. Keep the landscape gentle and uncluttered; the quiet six-tier base and small gabled chamber should remain the page's clear lesson.
