Crested Soultz Colouring

Meet the Crested Soultz, a domestic fancy pigeon whose country or region of origin is Soultz-sous-Forêts and nearby Wissembourg and Haguenau in northern Alsace, France. The breed is known for its delicate pastel-blue plumage, broad chest, horizontal tail and a rounded shell crest that ends in a rosette on each side rather than a pointed peak. A standard adult is a medium-tall pigeon about 38 centimetres long and usually around 550–600 grams. This page turns those real breed features into large, friendly shapes that young colourists can recognize without making the bird look like a cartoon chicken. The French-derived standard describes it as a comparatively recent breed made from Priest pigeons and the Hessian Pouter. It does not securely name one creator or a single creation year. Like every domestic pigeon breed, it belongs to the species Columba livia and ultimately descends from the wild rock pigeon. It is best understood as a carefully selected loft bird, not as a separate wild species. A suitable home is A spacious domestic loft with a sheltered aviary, sturdy perches, nest boxes and a dry, washable floor. Its clean legs are easy to manage, but the crest still benefits from roomy nest fronts and perches that do not rub or crush its feathers. Smooth, clean footing and safe perch spacing help prevent sore toes and damaged feathers. Offer a balanced pigeon grain or pellet ration, suitable grit and minerals, fresh water every day, and a shallow bath. A well-kept domestic pigeon commonly lives about 8 to 15 years, and some live longer, but lifespan depends on genetics, clean housing, nutrition, veterinary attention and protection from predators. Children should admire and colour pigeons while an adult handles real birds gently. Colouring guide: For a classic result, use a very pale powder blue on the body, a slightly deeper blue-grey on the neck, and dark grey on the tail and flight feathers. The two wing bars may be charcoal, while the small rump area can stay white. Colour the iris orange-red and the feet a gentle rosy red. Follow the curved sections of the shell crest with light pencil strokes so it looks rounded, but do not fill the crest so darkly that the rosettes disappear. Try honey-brown beams and cream plaster on the Alsatian wall, terracotta for the flower box, and green leaves with two bright flower colours. The bird should remain the strongest focus, so keep the courtyard paler than the pigeon. Before you finish, compare the two feet, the wing edges and the tail so no small section is missed. The simple background supports the story of the breed's origin, while the pigeon remains the star of the page. There is no single “correct” picture: a careful realistic palette teaches breed features, and an imaginative rainbow palette can be just as joyful.
