Club-Tailed Glyptodont Colouring

The club-tailed glyptodont, Doedicurus clavicaudatus, was one of the largest members of the armadillo family tree. It lived in South America, with fossils known especially from Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. Adults could reach about four metres long and may have weighed close to two tonnes. A solid domed shell covered the back, while a cap protected the head. The tail was extraordinary: thick armoured rings supported a huge terminal club with rounded projections. Scientists think adults could swing this heavy structure, perhaps during contests with others of their kind or for defence. Its short, strong legs supported the armour, and its broad teeth processed low vegetation. Doedicurus is easy to confuse with Glyptodon, but the massive tail club is the key special feature. Genetic evidence from fossil armour also helped show that glyptodonts belong within the wider armadillo family. They were mammals, not dinosaurs or turtles. Doedicurus survived until around the end of the last Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago. No final individual was observed or named. Climate and rainfall changes altered South American habitats, while humans spread through the same landscapes and hunted large animals. Scientists continue to discuss the balance between these pressures, so it is best not to claim that one cause has been proved. Use warm brown, tan, ochre, stone grey or muted olive for the giant shell. Colour the bony tiles in two nearby shades, leaving thin white gaps so each shape stays easy to see. Make the head and legs slightly lighter, the toenails dark grey, and the tail club a stronger rust or slate colour. The pampas can be yellow-green with grey rocks and pale blue hills. Try broad curved strokes over the dome, then short careful strokes around the armour rings. Keep the club fully inside the page and give its rounded knobs lighter tips. You may add a darker shadow beneath the animal, but avoid filling the background. The simple scene lets young artists compare an ordinary tapering glyptodont tail with Doedicurus's remarkable natural mace.
