Clownfish Reef Colouring Page

Clownfish are small reef fish famous for living among the stinging tentacles of sea anemones. About thirty clownfish species occur naturally in the warm Indian and Pacific oceans, from the Red Sea and eastern Africa through Southeast Asia to Australia and islands of the western Pacific. They usually stay close to a chosen anemone on a shallow coral reef or in a lagoon. A special mucus coating on their skin helps protect them from the anemone’s sting. The fish gains a hiding place, while the anemone may receive cleaning, nutrients, and protection from some nibbling animals. This helpful partnership is called symbiosis. Different clownfish species range from about 7 to 17 centimetres long. Many live around 6–10 years in the wild, and some can live considerably longer in protected conditions. They eat tiny drifting animals, small crustaceans, algae, and food scraps. A clownfish family has a clear order: the largest fish is the female, the next largest is the breeding male, and smaller fish wait below them. All begin life as males, and the leading male can change into a female if the group needs one. The male carefully fans and guards eggs laid on a hard surface near the anemone. In this picture, two cheerful clownfish peek through broad, waving anemone tentacles. For a classic look, colour their bodies bright orange and leave the three wide bands white. Add a thin black or dark-brown edge around each white band, then colour the fins orange with darker rims. You could also invent pink, yellow, blue, or purple clownfish while keeping the band pattern easy to see. Sea anemones come in many colours, so try green tentacles with pink tips, golden tentacles with orange tips, or a whole rainbow. Colour the sandy bottom pale tan, the reef rock warm grey or brown, and the water light blue. Keep the bubbles white or add a soft blue edge. Use long curved strokes from the base to the tip of each tentacle to make it look as if the current is moving it. Colour the larger shapes first, then finish the fins, eyes, bubbles, and tiny stones.
