Rhino Calf Colouring

A powerful rhinoceros walks beside a small calf at a peaceful African watering hole. The broad mouth and two nose horns suggest a white rhinoceros, a grazer native to parts of eastern and southern Africa. White rhinos favour open grasslands and savannas where they can crop short grass and find water or muddy wallows. Despite the name, their skin is grey, not white. Adults are enormous: they may reach about 1.5 to 1.8 metres at the shoulder, measure more than 3 metres long and weigh roughly 1,400 to 2,300 kilograms. With good conditions, a white rhino can live for around 35 to 50 years. A mother rhino usually has one calf at a time. The calf stays close behind or beside her and may remain with its mother for two to three years. She protects it while it learns where to graze, drink and rest. Rhinos have modest eyesight but excellent hearing and smell, and their swivelling ears help them notice sounds. Their horns are made of keratin, the same basic material found in human fingernails. In this scene, the adult and calf step along the edge of a shallow pool, with simple reeds, grass tufts and an acacia tree showing their savanna home. The calf's small horn and rounded body make it easy to distinguish from its large parent. Colour the rhinos with soft grey, warm grey-brown or even pale lavender. Use a slightly lighter shade for the calf and add pink or tan inside the ears. The horns can be cream, beige or light brown. Try blue for the watering hole, fresh green for the reeds, and golden yellow or olive green for the surrounding grass. A brown trunk and green crown will bring the distant acacia to life. Broad crayon strokes suit the large bodies, while short curved strokes can suggest thick skin without covering the clean outlines. Make the water ripples lighter near the bank. You can add dragonflies, tiny footprints or a bright sun in the open spaces, creating a gentle story about a calf learning the safe path to water.
