Chambered Nautilus Colouring

The chambered nautilus is an ancient-looking cephalopod from the tropical Indo-Pacific, especially around steep reefs and island slopes. During daylight it often stays in deep water, sometimes near 700 metres, then rises to shallower reef zones at night to search for crabs, shrimp, fish, and animal remains. Its coiled shell is usually about 16 to 21 centimetres across. Unlike most squid and octopuses, this slow-growing relative can live for more than 20 years and may not mature until it is 12 to 15 years old. Fossil relatives once filled ancient seas, and the modern nautilus body plan has remained recognisable for roughly 150 million years. The striped shell is divided internally into a series of chambers. The animal lives only in the newest, largest outer chamber. A narrow tube connects the empty chambers, allowing the nautilus to adjust gas and liquid and control its buoyancy. It swims by drawing water into its body and squirting it through a movable funnel. Around its mouth are more than 90 slender tentacles—far more than an octopus has. They do not carry suckers; instead, ridges and a sticky coating help the nautilus touch, smell, and grip food. Its simple pinhole-style eyes sense shapes and light, and a tough hood can cover the shell opening when danger approaches. Begin the shell with creamy white, pale gold, or peach. Add curved bands of cinnamon brown, burnt orange, or brick red, following the beautiful spiral from the centre outward. Keep some light gaps between bands so the coil remains easy to see. Colour the soft body and hood warm beige, rust, or gentle grey, and make the many tentacles slightly lighter. Two tiny fish can be silver, yellow, or blue. Use charcoal and brown on the rocky slope, green on the seagrass, and layered turquoise and navy in the water. Bubbles can stay white with a thin pale-blue edge. For a fantasy fossil look, try amber and bronze on the shell, or give each chamber band a different rainbow shade while keeping the spiral clear.
