Cedar Tree Colouring Page

The cedar on this page is a Himalayan cedar, or Cedrus deodara, native to the western Himalayas. Its scientific name is connected with a traditional idea of a divine or revered tree. In its mountain home it may grow 40 to 60 metres tall and can live for several centuries. Young trees are neatly conical, while older ones develop a broad, layered crown. Long horizontal branches end in graceful drooping tips. Needles grow in dense clusters on short shoots, and the barrel-shaped cones stand upright before slowly breaking apart to release winged seeds. Early autumn is a calm season in the cedar forest. Mature cones are developing, nights become cooler, and evergreen needles continue to shelter wildlife. Pine martens can travel along branches and rest in forest trees, while crested tits search for insects and seeds among conifer foliage. Roots hold mountain soil, crowns intercept rain, and fallen needles create habitat for fungi and small invertebrates. Cedars also have great cultural and historical importance. That importance is a reason to protect old forests, not to carve names into bark or take branches. Children should observe martens and birds quietly from a safe distance and explore steep mountain ground only with responsible adults. The illustration highlights the wide branch tiers, drooping tips, clustered needles, upright cones, marten, crested bird, rocks, and distant peaks. Colour the foliage deep green, blue-green, or silvery green, making the outer tips slightly lighter. Use grey-brown or warm cinnamon on the tall trunk and branches. Cones can be greenish when young and brown when mature; lighter scale edges will keep their pattern visible. A pine marten is often rich brown or chestnut with a creamy throat patch. The crested tit may combine tan, grey, cream, black, and a small pointed crest. Add muted greys, blues, and lavender to the distant mountains so they do not compete with the tree. Grass can mix olive and gold for early autumn. Follow drooping branch tips with downward strokes and needle clusters with short repeated strokes. Leave narrow white spaces between each layer. The completed picture should make the cedar look both graceful and strong, with wildlife comfortably sharing its mountain home.
