Cave Lion History Colouring

The Eurasian cave lion, Panthera spelaea, roamed from western Europe across northern Asia during the Ice Age. At times its relatives or populations extended through Beringia into northwestern North America. Despite its name, it probably hunted mainly in open steppe and tundra rather than living permanently inside caves. Caves preserved bones, and ancient people also drew lions on cave walls. Adults were generally larger than most modern lions, with a long body, powerful shoulders and sturdy legs. Scientific studies often reconstruct them as roughly 10 percent larger than living lions, though size differed by place and time. Their exact lifespan is unknown. Ancient art and rare frozen remains provide unusual clues to appearance. Many images show rounded ears, a tail tuft and no large mane, although an exact coat pattern cannot be proved. Cave lions hunted large herbivores such as reindeer, horses and young bison. Their strong limbs and large canine teeth suited close attacks. Research on bones and DNA shows that they were a distinct lion lineage, not simply modern lions sheltering in caves. The species disappeared near the end of the Pleistocene. Some regions lost cave lions around 14,000 years ago, while later records may reach roughly 12,500 years ago. There was no named last individual. The climate warmed, open hunting grounds changed, and many prey populations declined. Competition or hunting by people may also have added pressure. Scientists continue to test these ideas, so it is best to describe extinction as a combination of possible stresses rather than one certain cause. Colour the body pale tawny, honey gold, warm grey or creamy beige. Keep the throat and belly lighter and darken the paws and tail tuft slightly. Leave the neck smooth or add only a short ruff, following the cautious evidence from Ice Age art. Colour the cave rocks slate grey, brown or rust; make the grasses straw yellow and olive, the distant reindeer soft brown, and the cool sky light blue. Use curved strokes around the chest, longer strokes down the legs and tiny strokes on the tail tuft. A gentle amber eye and relaxed mouth will make this formidable Ice Age hunter welcoming to young artists.
