Cave Bear History Colouring

The European cave bear, Ursus spelaeus, lived across much of Europe during the Pleistocene. Its bones are especially common in limestone caves in countries such as France, Germany, Austria, Romania and Slovenia, and its wider relatives reached toward the Caucasus. This huge bear had a high, domed forehead, massive shoulders and a broad body. Large males could weigh several hundred kilograms, while females were usually smaller. Its teeth and chemical clues from bones suggest that many populations ate mostly plants, although diets could differ by place and season. It used caves repeatedly for winter shelter and hibernation, which is why whole layers of cave-bear bones accumulated. Fossils do not reveal its exact lifespan, but, like living large bears, it probably matured slowly and produced only a few cubs at a time. The cave bear disappeared about 24,000 years ago, before the coldest part of the last Ice Age. There was no single witnessed final animal, so no last bear has a recorded name. Researchers think several pressures overlapped. Colder, drier conditions reduced productive vegetation and suitable feeding areas. Bears depended on caves for winter survival, while Neanderthals and modern humans also used some caves. Human hunting seems to have occurred but was probably not the only cause. A specialised plant-heavy diet, slow reproduction and fragmented populations may have made recovery difficult as habitats changed. Scientists continue testing these ideas with radiocarbon dating, DNA and tooth chemistry. Colour this gentle cave-entrance scene with earthy Ice Age shades. The bear can be deep brown, russet, golden tan or nearly black, with pale beige around the muzzle. Use dark grey for the nose and claws but keep the eyes bright. Limestone may be cream, warm grey or soft ochre, while the ferns can be several greens and the distant hill pale blue-grey. Follow the rounded forehead and shoulders with curved pencil strokes. Short strokes will make the fur look thick without filling every space. Add a little darker colour beneath the belly and inside the cave, but do not make the cave solid black. Leaving the opening partly light keeps the bear's strong outline clear and makes a welcoming page for young colourists.
