Cauchois Pigeon Colouring

Meet the Cauchois, a domestic fancy pigeon whose country or region of origin is the Pays de Caux in Normandy, France. It is lively and elegant despite its size, with a broad rounded chest, long wings and tail, slightly raised posture and beautiful barred, self-coloured or laced wing patterns. Adults are very large pigeons, commonly around 700–800 grams, with males often at the upper end of that range. This page turns those real breed features into large, friendly shapes that young colourists can recognize without making the bird look like a cartoon chicken. The Cauchois is a very old French farm breed, documented in Normandy by the seventeenth century and later standardized as a show-and-utility pigeon. No single creator is reliably recorded. Like every domestic pigeon breed, it belongs to the species Columba livia and ultimately descends from the wild rock pigeon. It is best understood as a carefully selected loft bird, not as a separate wild species. A suitable home is A spacious dry loft or dovecote with broad perches, nest boxes and a secure outdoor flight suited to a long, large pigeon. Use strong perches and roomy nest bowls, and offer daily clean water, pigeon grit, minerals and a balanced grain or pellet diet. Smooth, clean footing and safe perch spacing help prevent sore toes and damaged feathers. Offer a balanced pigeon grain or pellet ration, suitable grit and minerals, fresh water every day, and a shallow bath. A well-kept domestic pigeon commonly lives about 8 to 15 years, and some live longer, but lifespan depends on genetics, clean housing, nutrition, veterinary attention and protection from predators. Children should admire and colour pigeons while an adult handles real birds gently. Colouring guide: Choose blue-grey with red, rose, white or yellow checks for the large scalloped wing shapes, or make a simpler red, yellow or black self-coloured bird. If you use the checked version, colour every large scallop evenly and leave narrow light spaces between them. Add a soft bib colour below the throat if desired, while keeping the back pale or white according to the variety. The eye is a lively orange-red, the beak pale, and the clean legs dark rosy red. Try cream plaster and dark brown beams on the Normandy barn, green leaves and red or golden apples. Keep the stones pale grey. Work slowly around the long wing tips and tail so these elegant shapes remain separate and the pigeon does not look like one solid block of colour. Before you finish, compare the two feet, the wing edges and the tail so no small section is missed. The simple background supports the story of the breed's origin, while the pigeon remains the star of the page. There is no single “correct” picture: a careful realistic palette teaches breed features, and an imaginative rainbow palette can be just as joyful.
