Cashew Tree Harvest Colouring

The cashew tree is native to tropical northeastern Brazil and is now cultivated in warm regions around the world. Portuguese traders helped carry it to Africa and Asia centuries ago. The evergreen tree usually grows about 5 to 12 metres in orchards, though an old specimen can spread wider and taller. It may live and produce for several decades. Leathery oval leaves form a broad crown, and small star-shaped flowers appear in branching sprays. After pollination, the true fruit develops as one curved, kidney-shaped nut. Above it, the swollen flower stalk becomes the juicy pear-shaped cashew apple. Dry-season months often bring ripening and harvest, though timing varies by region. Bees and other insects visit cashew flowers. Parakeets and mammals may sample the colourful apples, while the tree offers shade. The picture clearly shows each nut hanging beneath its apple, with a friendly parakeet, a honey bee and a harvest basket. Raw cashew shells contain irritating oils related to substances in poison ivy, so children must never crack or roast nuts themselves. Commercial cashews are carefully heat-treated and processed by trained adults. The apple can be used for drinks or cooking where it is grown, but only properly identified, clean produce should be tasted. Colour the cashew apples golden yellow, orange, rosy red or a mixture, leaving a small highlight. The curved nuts below can be olive green when fresh or grey-brown later, while processed kernels inside are cream. Use deep green for mature leathery leaves and lighter green for new growth. Flower sprays may be cream with pink or red touches. Give the trunk warm grey-brown and the basket honey and tan stripes. A parakeet can be leafy green with blue tail feathers and a coral beak; colour the bee amber and dark brown. Dry-season grass may be straw yellow with patches of green, and the distant grove should stay pale. Use rounded strokes on apples and careful outlines around the attached nuts so the unusual arrangement remains obvious. The completed page can be bright and inviting while reminding young artists that safe food processing matters as much as a successful harvest.
