Carneau Pigeon Colouring

Meet the Carneau, a domestic fancy pigeon whose country or region of origin is northern France and southern Belgium, especially the Lille–Tournai–Kortrijk region. It is an elegant, well-proportioned pigeon with a broad deep chest, rather short body, low legs and famously intense red or yellow plumage, sometimes with white shoulder epaulettes or rump. Modern European standards describe a medium-large pigeon around 600–675 grams, substantial but still active and fertile. This page turns those real breed features into large, friendly shapes that young colourists can recognize without making the bird look like a cartoon chicken. The Carneau is a very old Franco-Belgian farm breed. Its first published breed standard appeared in 1891, but no single original breeder or exact creation year is reliably known. Like every domestic pigeon breed, it belongs to the species Columba livia and ultimately descends from the wild rock pigeon. It is best understood as a carefully selected loft bird, not as a separate wild species. A suitable home is A dry loft or traditional dovecote with clean perches, nest boxes and a safe flight; this active utility breed benefits from room to move. Provide balanced pigeon grain or pellets, mineral grit, calcium, bathing water and a dry floor; its clean legs are easy to inspect. Smooth, clean footing and safe perch spacing help prevent sore toes and damaged feathers. Offer a balanced pigeon grain or pellet ration, suitable grit and minerals, fresh water every day, and a shallow bath. A well-kept domestic pigeon commonly lives about 8 to 15 years, and some live longer, but lifespan depends on genetics, clean housing, nutrition, veterinary attention and protection from predators. Children should admire and colour pigeons while an adult handles real birds gently. Colouring guide: For the classic look, colour the bird a rich warm red or golden yellow. Leave the small outlined shoulder epaulettes and rump white, or make the entire bird self-coloured. Apply several light pencil layers to build an even intense colour without hiding the wing outline. The lively iris can be orange-red with a small yellow inner ring, the beak pale, and the clean legs rosy red. Colour the brick arch in muted red-brown, add cream mortar, green leaves and bright flax-blue or pink flowers. Keep the distant tower pale. A white Carneau is also possible: if you choose it, use only the faintest cool blue on lower feather edges so children can still see the broad breast and short balanced shape. Before you finish, compare the two feet, the wing edges and the tail so no small section is missed. The simple background supports the story of the breed's origin, while the pigeon remains the star of the page. There is no single “correct” picture: a careful realistic palette teaches breed features, and an imaginative rainbow palette can be just as joyful.
