Camel Calf Colouring

Visit a peaceful desert oasis with a dromedary camel and its calf. Dromedaries are one-humped camels whose long history with people began in the dry regions of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Nearly all dromedaries today are domesticated, although feral herds live in Australia. They are suited to deserts and dry plains, where water and shade can be far apart. The small pool, date palms, sparse grass, and rolling dunes on this page show why an oasis is such a welcome resting place. A grown dromedary may stand about 1.8 to 2.1 metres high at the shoulder and weigh around 300 to 600 kilograms. With good care, camels can live roughly 40 to 50 years. Their hump stores fat, not water, providing energy when food is scarce. Long eyelashes and closable nostrils help keep out blowing sand. Wide, padded feet spread their weight across soft ground, while long legs lift the body above hot sand. Camels can cope with losing more body water than most mammals, then drink a large amount when water becomes available. A baby camel is called a calf. It drinks its mother's rich milk and stays close while learning to walk over uneven ground and eat desert plants. Camels are social animals that communicate with calls, posture, and scent. They can kneel by folding their long legs underneath them, and thick pads protect the body when resting on hot or rough ground. In this scene, the calf reaches affectionately toward the adult while the pair pauses beside the oasis. Choose sandy tan, golden brown, cream, or cinnamon for the coats. Make the adult a deeper shade and the calf slightly lighter, then add dark brown hooves, warm grey-brown knees, and a gentle pink-brown inside the ears. The date-palm leaves can be bright or deep green, with golden or reddish dates. Colour the oasis blue or turquoise and add a few green reflections. Dunes can be pale yellow, orange, peach, or rosy sunset pink. Broad crayons work well on the bodies, humps, and dunes. Use coloured pencils for eyelashes, nostrils, palm fronds, little grass tufts, and water ripples. Keep a white sparkle in each eye and enjoy building a warm, calm desert palette.
