Buffalo Calf Colouring

An African buffalo rests in tall grass with a young calf tucked safely beside her. African buffalo are native to sub-Saharan Africa and live in savannas, open woodlands, floodplains and forest edges, usually where water is not too far away. Adults have heavy bodies, strong legs and wide horns that curve outward and upward. A large animal can stand about 1 to 1.7 metres at the shoulder and weigh roughly 425 to 870 kilograms, with males generally larger than females. In the wild, African buffalo often live for about 15 to 25 years. They eat grasses and use their broad muzzles to crop plenty of food. Buffalo are famous for strong herd bonds. A herd may include many females, calves and adult males, and members can gather around a threatened youngster. Mothers recognize their calves by scent and voice. A newborn calf has a softer, reddish-brown coat and no large horns; it stays near its mother, drinks milk and gradually begins nibbling grass. Resting together is important during the hottest part of the day. In this scene, the adult lies calmly behind the calf, her broad horns clearly outlined, while the little calf curls close in the shelter of the grass. A distant acacia tree and low hills place the pair in an open African landscape. For natural colouring, try deep charcoal grey, dark brown or nearly black for the adult, but keep some highlights pale so the clean body shapes remain easy to see. The calf can be rusty brown, tan or warm grey. Colour the horns beige at the base and darker toward the tips. Use golden yellow and olive green for the tall grass, brown for the earth, and rich green for the acacia crown. A pale blue sky will keep the scene bright. Start with broad, gentle strokes in the large body spaces, then use short upward strokes on grass blades. Follow the curve of each horn slowly. You can add tiny yellow flowers, a butterfly or a few distant birds, turning the page into a warm story about safety, rest and teamwork in the herd.
