Bluebuck Antelope Colouring

The bluebuck, Hippotragus leucophaeus, was a graceful antelope found in the Western Cape of South Africa. By historical times its range was already small, centred between areas such as Caledon, Swellendam and Bredasdorp. It belonged to the same group as living sable and roan antelopes but was smaller, with one preserved adult standing about 1.19 metres at the shoulder. Both sexes carried backward-curving ridged horns, though males were usually larger. Early descriptions mention blue-grey fur, which inspired the name, but old skins have faded and only four historical museum specimens are now confidently identified by genetics. A pale facial patch, slim legs and a short mane helped distinguish it. The animal grazed in open grassland and probably moved between seasonal feeding areas. The final reported bluebuck was shot around 1799 or 1800, only a few decades after the species received its scientific description. No personal name was recorded for that last animal. Research shows the species had maintained a small but viable population for thousands of years before European colonisation. Its tiny range made it vulnerable when settlers hunted it, converted habitat, blocked movement and introduced domestic sheep that competed for grass. Hunting is therefore central to the extinction story, while habitat damage and livestock added pressure. The bluebuck became the first large African mammal species documented as becoming extinct in modern historical times. Although the page is black and white, children can imagine the subtle blue sheen described in its coat. Try blue-grey, smoky slate, pale lavender-grey or cool brown across the body. Add cream or white around the face and belly, with darker grey along the mane. The horns may be charcoal at the tips and tan near the base. Use green, silver and gold for fynbos leaves, then colour protea flowers pink, red, peach or yellow. The Cape hills can be soft purple and the bird bright blue or orange. Long gentle strokes suit the body, and narrow curved strokes help each horn ridge stand out. Keep the antelope's slim silhouette clear. This calm scene is also a reminder that a species with a small home can disappear quickly when people change that home.
