Blue Tang Colouring Page

The blue tang, also called the palette surgeonfish, is a lively reef fish from the tropical Indo-Pacific. It ranges from East Africa across the Indian Ocean to Southeast Asia, Japan, Australia, and many Pacific islands. Blue tangs live around coral reefs, where they can slip into narrow gaps when danger appears. Young fish may gather close to branching corals, while adults swim alone, in pairs, or in loose groups. They eat a mixture of algae and tiny drifting animals. By nibbling algae, they help stop it from covering spaces where corals and other reef creatures grow. An adult commonly measures about 25–31 centimetres, although a large one can approach 38 centimetres. Its typical wild lifespan is often estimated at 12–14 years, but some individuals may survive for more than 30 years. The flattened oval body turns easily between corals. Near the tail is a sharp defensive spine—the reason tangs are called surgeonfish. They do not chase people, but wild fish should be admired without touching. A blue tang can also change the strength of its colours and may lie on its side without moving when frightened, which can confuse a predator. This page shows one blue tang circling a rounded coral head as bubbles float upward. For a familiar natural palette, colour most of the body royal blue. Make the large curved side marking navy or almost black, but leave enough lighter blue around it so the outline stays clear. Colour the tail and small fin accents bright yellow. You can also design a fantasy tang in turquoise, violet, green, or rainbow colours. Use tan, coral-pink, orange, or pale purple for the rounded coral head, filling each broad coral patch with a different shade if you like. Make the seagrass two or three greens and the sand cream or light brown. A pale-blue water background will help the dark fish stand out; add slightly darker blue near the bottom for depth. Leave bubbles white with a thin blue edge. Colour the biggest body area first, follow the curve of the fish with smooth strokes, and finish with the fin rays, coral pattern, sand pebbles, and bright eye.
