Birmingham Roller Colouring

The Birmingham Roller comes from Birmingham and the surrounding West Midlands of England. It is famous for performing fast backward somersaults in flight, spinning in an unbroken roll before returning to its kit. The National Birmingham Roller Club describes a small, neat, tightly feathered pigeon with clean legs and wings folded smoothly over the tail. Its body is compact and athletic rather than heavily ornamented. Club history says the exact creation date is uncertain. Fulton mentioned it in 1876, and Charles Leinhard imported and advertised Birmingham birds in the United States in the late 1870s. William Pensom later became highly influential in North America, but he promoted and refined existing Birmingham stock rather than inventing the breed. A specific lifespan for Birmingham Rollers is not established. They need expert selection, safe flying conditions, a secure kit loft, balanced feed, and protection from predators; performance should never be forced. The colouring page shows a calm Roller on its landing board, with brick buildings and a small feather swirl hinting at motion. Colour the pigeon blue-grey, black, red, yellow, white, almond, grizzle, or a mottled pattern. A classic blue bird can have two charcoal wing bars and a darker tail band. Make the brick loft warm red and brown, the distant factory roofs cool grey, and the sky pale blue. Leave the feather swirl light so it does not look like another bird. Use curved strokes on the rounded chest and shorter strokes around the neck. Keep the folded wing smooth and tidy, because tight feathering is part of the working shape. Older children can create a balanced mottle by adding small patches on both wings; beginners can choose one bold colour. Add a soft shadow on the board beneath the feet. The real pigeon’s roll happens in the air and requires responsible adult keepers, so this friendly standing pose is the safest way to celebrate its talent. When the page is finished, imagine a whole kit circling together above Birmingham before landing home.
