Barosaurus Lake Colouring

Travel to a peaceful lake in the Late Jurassic and say hello to Barosaurus, one of the most wonderfully long dinosaurs ever discovered. Barosaurus lived around 155 to 145 million years ago in western North America, and its fossils are known from the Morrison Formation. Its name means “heavy lizard,” although its body was built with air spaces in many bones that helped lighten the enormous skeleton. Scientists estimate that Barosaurus could reach about 24 to 27 metres from its tiny head to the tip of its tail—longer than two large buses parked end to end. It was a sauropod, a group of four-legged, plant-eating dinosaurs. Barosaurus had an exceptionally long, slender neck, a deep body supported by strong column-like legs, and a very long tapering tail. It could browse leaves over a wide area while keeping its huge body in one place. Like other sauropods, it probably swallowed plant food without chewing very much. This page shows a Barosaurus standing beside a calm Jurassic lake. Its towering neck reaches toward leafy branches while its long tail curves safely across the scene. Gentle ripples, rounded stones, small ferns, cycads, distant hills, and tall conifers complete the ancient habitat. The simple background leaves plenty of room for broad strokes and makes the dinosaur’s extraordinary proportions easy to see. For a natural look, colour the Barosaurus warm grey, moss green, dusty brown, or a mix of earthy tones. You can add spots or stripes along the neck and tail, perhaps using a darker version of the body colour. Try a lighter belly and a small bright eye. Colour the lake pale or deep blue, leaving narrow white gaps between ripple lines to make the water sparkle. Use forest green for the conifers, fresh green for the ferns, and yellow-green for the cycads. Shore stones can be tan, rust, or cool grey, and the distant hills can fade into soft purple. If you prefer a fantasy dinosaur, give it cheerful blue, orange, or violet markings. Work from the largest open shapes to the smallest plants, keep your pencil or crayon inside the bold lines, and enjoy building your own quiet Jurassic lakeside.
