Atreus Treasury Colouring

The Treasury of Atreus is a monumental Mycenaean tomb near the ancient citadel of Mycenae in Greece. It was built during the Late Bronze Age, usually dated to about 1300-1250 BCE. Despite its traditional name, it was not a treasury, and archaeologists cannot prove that the mythical King Atreus or Agamemnon was buried there. It is a tholos, or beehive tomb, probably made for a powerful ruler or royal family. Visitors approach along a long open passage called a dromos. Huge, carefully cut stone blocks frame the tall doorway, and a triangular opening above the lintel reduces the weight pressing down on it. Beyond the entrance is a round chamber roofed by rings of stone that step inward until they meet at the top. This corbelled dome was an extraordinary engineering achievement. The tomb once had richer decoration around its entrance, including carved half-columns. Its chamber was emptied long ago, so the identity of the person buried there and the original grave gifts remain unknown. The monument is part of the World Heritage site of Mycenae and Tiryns and helps us study the skill, organisation and beliefs of Mycenaean society. In this colouring scene, the stone-lined dromos draws your eyes toward the doorway and its large triangular opening. Begin with light limestone shades: cream, warm grey, sandy beige and pale brown. Make alternate blocks slightly different so children can see how the walls were assembled. Use darker grey-brown just inside the doorway and lighter colour on the sunlit passage. The beehive chamber visible beyond can change gradually from tan at the bottom to soft grey near the top. Colour the rocky hill muted brown, the olive tree trunk warm grey and its leaves silver-green. The flowers may be yellow, pink or purple. Use long strokes along the passage floor to strengthen its perspective, then curved rows of strokes inside the dome. Avoid making every stone dark; broad pale blocks will keep the entrance powerful and easy to understand. Your finished page should feel mysterious, sturdy and ancient without pretending that a legendary treasure is still hidden inside.
