Atlantic Sailfish Colouring

Meet the Atlantic sailfish, a speedy billfish that lives in the warm and temperate parts of the Atlantic Ocean. It is often seen around the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, West Africa, and other offshore waters where schools of sardines, anchovies, and squid provide food. Sailfish usually travel through the sunlit upper ocean, although they can dive into cooler, deeper water while following prey. Many studied sailfish are about four or five years old, while estimates suggest that especially long-lived individuals may reach roughly 13 to 15 years. Adults are commonly about 1.5 to 2.4 metres long, but a very large sailfish can approach 3 metres from its bill to its forked tail. Its most famous feature is the enormous dorsal fin that rises like a boat's sail. The fish can lower this fin for smooth swimming and raise it during sharp turns, excitement, or group hunting. Its long pointed bill helps it slash through a tight school and stun small fish before eating them. A streamlined body and powerful tail make the sailfish one of the ocean's quickest swimmers. In this picture, the raised sail, narrow bill, bubbles, surface waves, and distant fish make the animal's open-water home easy to recognise. Start colouring the back with deep navy, cobalt blue, or blue-black, then let the lower body become pale silver or light blue. Sailfish often show bright blue spots and bars, so you can add neat blue marks without filling every open space. Make the great sail dark blue, violet, turquoise, or a magical mixture, colouring each fin section carefully. Try silver-grey on the bill and tail, and give the small school warm silver or yellow details. Use several blues for the water, leaving a few white highlights around bubbles and wave tops. Keep the belly light so it looks shiny, and colour slowly around the clean fin rays. Realistic colours are wonderful, but a rainbow sail is welcome too.
