Apatosaurus River Colouring

This enormous Apatosaurus has paused beside a peaceful river for a cool drink. Its long neck curves down to the water while gentle ripples spread around its small muzzle. Apatosaurus lived in western North America during the Late Jurassic Period, about 152 to 151 million years ago. Its fossils have been discovered in the Morrison Formation, including sites in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Oklahoma. A large adult could grow roughly 21 to 23 metres long and weigh around 16 to 22 tonnes, although estimates vary as scientists study new evidence. That is much heavier than an elephant! Apatosaurus was a sauropod, the group of giant four-legged plant eaters with long necks and tails. Compared with the more lightly built Diplodocus, Apatosaurus had a particularly deep body, massive legs, and an unusually thick, muscular neck. Strong neck bones helped support its head while it gathered leaves from ferns, cycads, and other Jurassic plants. Its small peg-like teeth were good for pulling vegetation rather than chewing it into tiny pieces. The tail stretched far behind the body and helped balance this tremendous animal as it moved. To colour the scene, choose a main dinosaur shade such as earthy green, warm brown, stone grey, or muted blue. Add a lighter colour to the underside of the neck and belly, then use a darker shade along the back and upper tail. You can create gentle stripes, spots, or a simple two-tone pattern, because nobody knows the exact colours of Apatosaurus skin. Colour the river blue, turquoise, or even pale green, and trace the ripple lines with a slightly deeper shade. The broad riverbank can be sandy yellow or light brown. Use a mixture of fresh and dark greens for the ferns and cycads, brown for the trunks, grey for the stones, and soft blue or purple for the far hills. Begin with the broad body and open water, then carefully colour the small head, toes, leaves, and curved shoreline. Keep your strokes inside the strong outlines and leave a few pale highlights on the water. When you finish, imagine this giant lifting its wet muzzle and slowly continuing through the ancient landscape. This relaxing page combines creative colouring with a close look at one of the strongest, most impressive plant eaters ever to walk the Earth.
