Antwerp Smerle Colouring

Antwerp Smerle is a domestic fancy pigeon connected with Flanders, especially the Antwerp region of Belgium. This is the largest owl/frill pigeon: a strong, stocky bird with a broad smoothly curved head, medium-short beak, lively eyes, horizontal body, developed breast jabot and white body carrying coloured wing shields. Modern standards place adults around 575–650 grams, making the Antwerp Smerle noticeably larger than most owl pigeons. This is not a wild species with a natural forest or mountain range; it belongs in a clean, dry, well-ventilated loft or aviary where it has suitable perches, fresh water, balanced pigeon food and safe room to move. History detectives should be careful with old breeds. Belgian heritage sources say smerles were present in the region around the 1600s and once worked as short-distance travelling pigeons. Antwerp fanciers later shaped the ornamental breed. The national federation requested a standard in 1896 and the first standard appeared in 1903; later outcrossing helped produce today’s larger, more powerful type. No one breeder can responsibly be called the sole creator. Smerles were known in the Low Countries by about the 1600s; a Belgian standard was pursued in 1896 and published in 1903. No single founding breeder is reliably documented. A healthy domestic pigeon often lives about 8–15 years, and some well-cared-for birds live longer. Lifespan depends on good food, clean water, safe housing, gentle handling, parasite control and help from an avian veterinarian when needed. Fancy features may need extra attention: short-beaked birds must be watched at feeding time, large croppers need sensible husbandry, and heavily feathered feet should be kept dry and clean. This page is for learning and colouring, not a guide to keeping a bird without an experienced adult. In this scene, a powerful Antwerp Smerle stands in a Belgian brick courtyard beside a loft ledge, tulips and cobblestones. The background is deliberately simple so the breed remains the star and young artists have large spaces to fill. Leave the body mostly white and colour the large wing shield blue, silver, black, red or yellow. You can add two bars, checks or simple lacing while keeping the shield edge neat. Try an orange-red eye, pale beak and warm red feet. Colour the bricks soft rust or tan, tulips in two cheerful colours and cobblestones pale grey without heavy shading. The Smerle’s jabot should look fluffy, so use lighter colour around its feather curls and keep the black outline clean. Children can begin with the pigeon, move to the nearest plants or building, and finish with the ground. Crayons, pencils or washable markers all work well; a scrap sheet beneath the page can protect the table.
