American Lion Colouring Page

The American lion, Panthera atrox, was one of the largest cats in Ice Age America. Fossils have been found across North America, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, and its range reached into parts of northwestern South America. It lived during the late Pleistocene and disappeared about 11,000 years ago. National Park Service material describes it as roughly 25 percent larger than a modern African lion. Estimates place adults about 1.5 to 2.4 metres long from head to body and approximately 225 to 360 kilograms, although individuals varied. Scientists cannot calculate a certain lifespan from the fossil record. This cat had long legs, a powerful chest and a skull equipped with strong slicing teeth. It shared the landscape with mammoths, bison, horses, camels, dire wolves and Smilodon. Its longer-legged build suggests a hunter able to move across broad open country. The exact coat colour is unknown, and scientists do not know whether males wore a large mane like many modern African lions. For a cautious reconstruction, this page shows a smooth-necked animal so children can focus on the fossil-based body shape rather than an unproved mane. American lions vanished during the late-Pleistocene extinction, when many large prey species also disappeared. No named last individual is known. A warming climate altered grasslands and water supplies, herbivore communities collapsed or moved, and people were present on the continent. Each factor may have affected this predator, but the relative importance of climate, prey loss and people is still debated. Colour the lion in sandy tan, golden ochre, reddish beige or a cool stone grey. Make the muzzle, throat and belly cream, then deepen the shoulders, back and tail tip. A faint pattern is an imaginative option, but keep it gentle because the true coat is unknown. Use sage green and dusty gold for the open plain, blue-grey for far hills, and pale blue for the sky. Long strokes along the legs will make them look tall; curved strokes around the shoulders will show strength. Add a small white glint to the eye and nose. Keep the mouth relaxed so this giant Ice Age cat feels impressive rather than frightening.
