Allosaurus Footprints Colouring

Follow a calm Allosaurus as it takes careful steps across a muddy Jurassic floodplain. Behind the dinosaur, a clear trail of large three-toed footprints crosses shallow puddles and soft earth. Ferns, stones, and distant conifers complete the scene while leaving lots of open space for colouring. Allosaurus lived during the Late Jurassic Period, about 155 to 145 million years ago. Fossils are especially common in the Morrison Formation of western North America, including rocks in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, and related fossils have also been found in Portugal. Its name means different lizard. A large adult was often around 8 to 10 metres long, though some individuals may have grown larger, and it probably weighed roughly 1.5 to 2.5 tonnes. This meat-eating dinosaur had a deep head, low ridges above its eyes, powerful hind legs, a long balancing tail, and surprisingly short arms. Unlike the two-fingered Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus had three clawed fingers on each hand. Its feet also had three main weight-bearing toes, which made tracks shaped like the prints on this page. Fossil trackways help palaeontologists study how dinosaurs walked, how fast they moved, and whether several animals crossed the same ground. Start colouring the Allosaurus with forest green, warm brown, sandy tan, or slate grey, or invent a bright pattern because its real colours are unknown. Try a lighter belly and a darker back. You could add soft stripes along the tail or gentle spots across the body without filling every open area. Colour the eye ridges in a contrasting orange, red, or blue so this useful feature is easy to notice. Make the mud earthy brown and use darker brown around the deep footprints. Puddles can be pale blue with small white highlights, while the ferns can mix olive, emerald, and yellow-green. Use grey or tan for the rounded stones and soft green for the distant conifers. Press lightly on the far background and more firmly on the dinosaur and tracks to make them stand out. As you colour, count the footprints and imagine what scientists could learn from this peaceful walk.
