Alexandria Lighthouse Colouring

The Lighthouse of Alexandria, also called the Pharos of Alexandria, guided ships toward one of the busiest ports of the ancient Mediterranean world. It stood on the island of Pharos beside Alexandria, Egypt, and was completed during the Ptolemaic period in the early third century BCE. Ancient writers praised its extraordinary height and engineering, making it one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Modern estimates vary, but it may have risen more than 100 metres. The lighthouse was built in distinct levels: a broad square base, a narrower middle section and a round upper tower. At the top, a fire or bright beacon helped sailors identify the harbour, perhaps aided by a polished reflective surface. The structure survived for many centuries, longer than most ancient wonders. Earthquakes gradually damaged it during the medieval period, and later stone from the ruins was reused. The Citadel of Qaitbay now stands near its former site. Archaeologists have also studied large blocks and statues found underwater around the harbour. Although the exact decoration is uncertain, coins and written descriptions help historians reconstruct the lighthouse's stacked shape. This page highlights those three clear sections so children can understand how the tower grew narrower as it rose. A small sailing boat, two seagulls and gentle waves show its important connection with sea travel. Colour the lighthouse with pale limestone shades such as cream, warm white, sandy beige or light grey. Add slightly darker colour beneath ledges and around windows so each level stands apart. The glowing beacon can be bright yellow, orange and red, with pale golden rays around it. Make the boat's wooden hull brown and choose a cheerful red, blue or striped sail. Colour the sea turquoise near the shore and deeper blue farther away, leaving the wave crests white. The seagulls can remain mostly white with grey wing tips, yellow beaks and tiny black eyes. Use soft blue for the sky and a warm peach or gold near the horizon. Straight vertical strokes suit the lighthouse walls, while curved side-to-side strokes create moving water. Keep the top flame bright and the tower mostly light so it looks as if it is shining over the harbour. You may add one or two small clouds, but leave plenty of open space around the tall silhouette.
