African Tulip Tree Colouring

The African tulip tree, Spathodea campanulata, comes from tropical Africa. In warm, moist climates it can grow quickly into a tree about 10 to 25 metres tall, although garden specimens are often smaller. It usually lives for several decades. The crown is rounded, the leaves are made from several leaflets, and the flower buds cluster at the ends of branches. When they open, the flowers resemble upright cups, bells, or little tulips. Long, boat-shaped seed pods later release many light, winged seeds that can travel on the breeze. Flowering often becomes especially lively during warm, wet months. Rain refreshes the broad foliage and helps new buds form. The cups hold nectar that attracts sunbirds and insects, so the bird and butterfly in this scene are important partners rather than decorations. Birds transfer pollen while feeding, and the branches offer resting places. In some tropical islands and other regions outside its original range, African tulip tree can spread too freely and compete with local plants. That is why adults should check local planting advice before choosing any tree. Children can learn an excellent nature lesson from this: a beautiful species may belong in one ecosystem but need careful management in another. This page shows a mature tree after rain, with compound leaves, big flower cups, unopened buds, puddles, a sunbird, and a butterfly. Try orange-red or scarlet on the open flowers and add a narrow yellow edge or centre. The buds can be deeper red or rusty brown. Colour the many leaflets with two or three greens, making new tips lighter. The trunk may be grey-brown with warmer colour near the roots. African sunbirds come in many species and can have sparkling green, blue, purple, yellow, or red feathers; create a jewel-like pattern while keeping the beak dark and slender. Give the butterfly a simple repeating pair of colours. Use pale blue for the puddles and sky, then add soft green grass around them. Follow the curve of each flower with smooth strokes and the direction of each leaflet with short strokes. Leave narrow white highlights on wet leaves and water. The bright flowers and feeding bird should be the first things a viewer notices.
