Aardvark Baby Colouring

Dig into a fascinating African night with an aardvark and its baby! Aardvarks are native to sub-Saharan Africa and live in savannas, open woodland, scrub, and grassland where ants, termites, and diggable soil are plentiful. An adult's head and body can measure about 1 to 1.3 metres, with a thick tail adding another 45 to 70 centimetres. Large adults may weigh around 40 to 80 kilograms. Their exact wild lifespan is difficult to study because they are shy and active at night, but aardvarks can live roughly 18 to 23 years in protected care. The name aardvark means “earth pig,” but this unusual mammal is not a pig. It is the only living species in its special order. Long rabbit-like ears help it listen, a narrow snout finds insect scent, powerful front claws open hard ground, and a sticky tongue gathers thousands of ants and termites. An aardvark can close its nostrils while digging, which keeps dust and insects out. It also digs deep sleeping burrows. When the aardvark later moves away, many other animals may use the empty shelter, so its digging creates valuable homes across the grassland. A baby, sometimes called a cub, stays with its mother while it learns to walk, dig, and search for food. In this colouring scene, the adult loosens the soil beside a towering termite mound while the smaller baby copies the digging action. Give their bodies warm sandy brown, dusty pink-brown, soft grey, or a mix of those colours. The large inner ears can be pale pink, the claws dark grey, and the long tails slightly darker at the tip. Colour the termite mound rusty orange, tan, or deep ochre, using a darker tone near its cracks and openings. The loosened soil can mix several browns, while grass tufts may be gold and green. Add a brown trunk and green crown to the distant acacia tree, then choose pale blue, lavender, or sunset orange for the sky. Use long smooth strokes on the ears and tails, short strokes for body fur, and little circular marks in the soil to show digging. You may add tiny ants near the mound, but keep them small and friendly. A bright moon or a few stars would turn the scene into the aardvarks' favourite nighttime adventure.
